TIMELINE Q3 · Q4 2021 - Q1 · Q2 2022
Turingo started in 2018 as a platform to help entrepreneurs start their digital transformation and succeed with their businesses through online courses. In 2021, we changed our product core and redesigned the website with a new architecture to integrate interaction and collaboration alongside online classes.

I was part of this big goal by first redesigning the website, and I continued working on this project by designing new features to allow users to interact with the site and other people and keep growing in this digital world as a community.
THE CHALLENGE
A NEED TO INTEGRATE THE COMMUNITY
After pivoting the core product and redesigning the platform with a new architecture (see case study), the website was still needing to integrate interaction and collaboration into our platform, to improve engagement and retention.
Our users still don't have where to collaborate and network on the website, and the need for it to grow their businesses is latent.
GOAL
ADD INTERACTION TO OUR WEBSITE
Our goal is to
implement features to allow our users to interact with the platform and other people to empower them to learn, share, network, and succeed.
This will benefit and enhance our new business model by having a hybrid platform, with communities as the core with online courses to keep helping entrepreneurs, increasing engagement and retention.
PROCESS
DEFINING DESIGN PRIORITIES
I led the design process end-to-end, working closely alongside another designer, 2 engineers, and 1 content creator. To gradually start implementing interaction on our website, we first decided to optimize one of our existing features. We designed the course review and lesson comments as the initial steps, followed by the community feed, mentions, and notifications as an MVP definition.
FEATURES IMPLEMENTATION

1 •
 Course review

2 •  Lessons comments

3 •  Community feed

4 •  Notifications and mentions

RESEARCH & CONTEXT
WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT OUR USERS?

1 •  Users feel alone in the entrepreneur journey and, during research sessions, have expressed the need to know people alike and network.

Our community started after an activity in 2019. The assistants wanted to keep interacting, so we created a WhatsApp group. When we reached the top of users, we migrated to Telegram. Now, they are +600 members.

3 •  With a chat so big, members say the content gets lost, making it hard to follow up on all the conversations. They feel overwhelmed but don't want to miss networking with other entrepreneurs.

In our community, they create an ecosystem to solve their needs through collaboration and interaction.

They agree to migrate to a new platform, have everything in one place and be part of a Turingo network.
* Results from 7 interviews and a survey of 150 participants.
OPTIMIZING AN EXISTENT FEATURE
COURSE REVIEW & LESSON COMMENTS

Online reviews can help users shortcut their research and make better and faster decisions when looking for a course. Users can express their opinion and allow potential users to learn more about the brand and the course. People appreciate recommendations before deciding, as is the traditional word-of-mouth.
On the other side, reviews help us build trust and reliability, improve our content and know-how to create better courses according to users' needs, improving conversion rates.
I designed a modal asking for their feedback right after users complete a course and before they get their certificate. Users can rate from 1 to 5 stars, adding an explanation optionally.
Similar to reviews, we implemented comments into the lessons. Users can access them once they subscribed to a specific course, on the lesson player screen. They can start the interaction by commenting, liking others' opinions, or starting a conversation about a topic from the lesson. I also designed a flow to allow users to report reviews and the lesson comments.

Results:
•
+1.500 reviews made for our different courses
• ★★★★★ Average of 5/
5 points, 80% of them with additional comments.
• ⬆︎ They helped report bugs in their reviews and comments, allowing us to fix them faster.
GETTING INTO OUR BIG GOAL
COMMUNITY FEED

The activity feed role is fundamental for our primary goal. It will allow the integration of the community from outside the website into it and potentially increase retention and engagement.
From the work I did, users can post comments and keep track of what is new and meet like-minded people, making their interaction easier and potentially growing their business connections. They all can talk about related topics, get in touch regularly with entrepreneurs, and be part of the same language community.

This project is in progress and waiting for its release, but I worked on an MVP feed with 3 main screens: community feed, participants, and the community information. For the community feed, I designed different post types: text, link, image, video, files, and surveys.

COMPLEMENTING THE FEED
NOTIFICATIONS AND MENTIONS

It's hard to grow an activity feed without notifications and mentions. People like to know when someone has commented or liked one of their posts or comments, and also when someone mentions them.

RESULTS
• ✔︎  We are building a community for +33,000 users.

• ✔︎ Increased the engagement and retention of the platform.

• ✔︎
It is our first time building a hybrid platform, and we are a small team of 2 engineers, 2 designers, and 1 content manager.
